SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE FACTS
Smith Mountain Lake was created in 1966 as a hydro-electric dam from the Roanoke and Blackwater Rivers. The lake boasts over 550 miles of shoreline, covering more than 20,600 acres with a length of 40 miles.
Average temperatures in the lake area are 83 degrees in the summer and 35 degrees in the winter. Humidity year-round is 62 percent with an average annual rainfall of 45 inches. Average annual snowfall is less than 15 inches.
The Smith Mountain Lake area has a population of an estimated 18,000 and within a 40-mile radius of the lake, the population is about 600,000. Cities and towns within an hour or less commuting distance include Rocky Mount, Roanoke, Salem, Vinton, Bedford, Lynchburg, Martinsville and Danville.
Recreation at the lake includes boating, swimming, sailing, waterskiing, parasailing, camping, fishing and golfing.
